Test Day Three – Queensland Raceway

Broc Feeney – Car #88
“Overall, it was a pretty eventful day for the team. It’s been really good. Jamie did a lot of laps, probably a couple of Bathurst 1000’s today. We got through most of our program, maybe not all due to the stoppages on track. Pitstops and driver changes are all looking good. Jamie and I are pretty consistent with our times in regard to the driver changeovers and are confident in being able to do them as quickly as we can. There was a lot going on today but I feel like we ticked the boxes we needed to.”

Jamie Whincup – Car #88
“It’s been a mixed day on track for all three of our cars. On the #97 side of the garage we had an incident where the car lost the brakes and it resulted in quite a heavy impact, luckily Shane was okay and that is the most important thing. The car coped the damaged quite well and the team managed to get it back out on track for the end of the day which is a massive effort on their part. A key part of this test day was to give Richie lap time and because of the hard work by the team we were able to do this. On the #88 side, I’ve been loving being back in (the car) and getting a feel for driving it. The last thing to still come is probably finding where to maximise the braking zones, everything else is in a good place and I’m feeling good heading into Sandown.”

Richie Stanaway – Car #97
“Unfortunately, earlier in the day Shane did have a brake failure. The main thing is that he is okay because it was a pretty big impact. We had a lot on the program today, so not being able to get the full testing because of the incident, definitely wasn’t the best lead into Sandown. Luckily the team did manage to turn the car around to get some laps in this afternoon which was really productive, so a big kudos to them. The laps in the end were so valuable which made it worth while for everyone. It’s been good to drive it again with proximity to the race, compared to the test days which were earlier in the year.”
Mark Dutton – Team Manager, Red Bull Ampol Racing
“Everything started smoothly today with all the pre-track checks being completed. We were running through the test plan and part of that was a change in the brakes. What looks like has happened is that one of the fittings has been knocked on the calliper and subsequently come loose. Shane as he entered turn 6 and had a driver’s worst nightmare where the pedal goes to the floor, no front brakes, tries to slow down, goes off into the gravel, and then ends perfectly square. Ending up square in the fence is important because it meant that the impact was distributed equally on the car, this is why we have been able to fix it and get it back out on track. We didn’t think we’d be able to get it back on track once we saw how deep it was buried in the tyres. The crew have worked incredibly hard to get it back on track.”
